What Is the Blue Radical P-01 (Periodontal Treatment Device)?
The Blue Radical P-01 is a medical device developed by Tohoku University for periodontal therapy, including the disinfection of periodontitis-affected areas and periodontal pockets, as well as scaling procedures.
Based on clinical trial data, it has received approval from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan.
Following a dentist’s diagnosis, this device may be used for patients with severe periodontal disease, corresponding to Stage III or Stage IV periodontitis.
The Blue Radical P-01 works by irradiating 3% hydrogen peroxide with blue light to generate reactive oxygen species (radicals).
Because these reactive oxygen species have strong antibacterial properties, the device—when combined with conventional ultrasonic vibration—acts on biofilm (bacterial colonies) within periodontal pockets to achieve effective disinfection.
How the Blue Radical P-01 Works
The Blue Radical P-01 is characterized by its ability to deliver the following three actions simultaneously:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Blue laser light
- Ultrasonic vibration
By applying these three elements at the same time, free radicals are generated, which cause oxidative damage to bacteria and disinfect the interior of the periodontal pocket
In addition, the ultrasonic vibration of the treatment tip helps remove plaque (dental biofilm) and tartar (calculus).
Clinical trial results have reported that, due to its strong antibacterial effect, symptoms such as inflammation and pus caused by plaque and calculus were reduced, and periodontal pocket depth decreased. These findings form the basis for the recognition of its effectiveness in periodontal treatment.
Compared with conventional ultrasonic cleaning alone, the Blue Radical P-01 may offer improved control of symptoms such as mild tooth mobility, inflammation, and pus, and is expected to help suppress further deterioration of periodontal tissue conditions.
Reduced Discomfort During Treatment
Conventional periodontal surgical treatments often require incisions, suturing, and suture removal, which can be time-consuming and invasive.
In contrast, the Blue Radical P-01 is a on-surgical periodontal therapy that does not involve gingival incisions.
Local anesthesia commonly used in standard dental procedures is administered when the treatment tip is inserted into the periodontal pocket. As a result, post-treatment pain is generally mild in most cases.

What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease has become a serious public health concern and is often referred to as a “national disease.”
In its early stages, symptoms are difficult to notice, and the condition progresses quietly over time. For this reason, it is sometimes called a “silent killer.”
As periodontal disease advances, inflammation affects not only the gums but also the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone that support the teeth. This can lead to tooth mobility, and in severe cases, tooth loss.
Recent studies have also shown that periodontal bacteria may trigger or worsen serious systemic conditions, including aspiration pneumonia, diabetes, heart disease, cerebral infarction (stroke), and dementia.
Are You Experiencing Any of the Following Symptoms?
- Bleeding from the gums
- Being told that you have deep periodontal pockets
- Concern about loose or unstable teeth
- A desire to avoid surgical treatment
About the Treatment
- Local anesthesia is used during the procedure.
- The treatment time and number of sessions vary depending on the severity of periodontal disease, as well as the treatment area and number of teeth involved.
- After treatment, the gums may appear temporarily white, but this usually resolves within approximately one day.
- As a general rule, subsequent cavity treatment and prosthetic treatment after Blue Radical therapy are provided as self-pay (non-insurance-covered) services.
- If oral hygiene management is insufficient, reinfection may occur and the expected results may not be achieved.
- Treatment outcomes vary among individuals, and depending on the condition, additional procedures, periodontal surgery, or tooth extraction may be recommended.
- This treatment device is intended to remove bacteria and does not regenerate periodontal tissue that has already been lost.
Risks and Possible Side Effects
This treatment may not be suitable for individuals who:
- Are unable to receive local anesthesia
- Use a pacemaker
- Have photosensitivity
- Have acatalasemia
