What is a saliva-based cancer risk test?

Saliva contains many metabolic substances, and by comprehensively analyzing the concentration of a substance called polyamines, the current risk of cancer is evaluated. This is the latest cancer risk test that has been put into practical use based on data from clinical research, mainly conducted by Keio University and Tokyo Medical University. The cancers that are tested include pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and oral cancer (as of May 2017).

■ About saliva-based cancer risk testing (Q&A)

Q: How do you test with saliva?

A: Saliva contains about 500 types of metabolic substances, among which a substance called "polyamines" is known to increase in cancer. A small amount of saliva (about 0.4 ml) is collected and the concentration of these polyamines is comprehensively analyzed to determine the "cancer risk."

Q: What cancers can be screened for?

A: The cancers that will be screened include pancreatic cancer, which is difficult to detect early; colorectal cancer, which is seeing an increasing number of patients but is a burden to undergo the test; young breast cancer, lung cancer, and oral cancer, which are difficult to detect by mammography.

Q: Will this test always detect cancer?

A: This test is not intended to diagnose cancer, but is a "screening test" to check for suspicion of cancer. Even if the value is abnormal, it does not immediately confirm that you have cancer. If you find abnormal values, consult the medical institution where the test was performed and undergo a detailed examination.
